Many of us constantly ponder about that question. Some people think that one should start working out at the age of 16 and some believe that one should start working out at any age. In this article, we will discuss about the best age to start training.
So what is the best age to start calisthenics?
Recall that calisthenics is a body weight workout that can be done anywhere and does not require any special equipment (except pull up bar and dips station). Therefore, anyone (even children below the age of 12 years old) can benefit from training calisthenics. There is no ideal age for calisthenics, but the earlier you start the better it is. According to the Centers for Disease Control, children should perform 60 minutes or more of physical activity every day. However, for children that start training calisthenics from such a young age, proper guidance and monitoring is a key to prevent any injuries due to improper form or technique. Also, keep in mind that the bodies of children under 13-14 are not ready to build significant amounts of muscle (due to lack of growth hormone and testosterone).
What about weight training?
As mentioned above, children and pre-teens who try to build muscles before their body is ready will most likely be disappointed. Therefore, it is recommended that one starts weight training as soon as they hit puberty (around 14 years old). Below that, children can still start lifting lighter weights if the want but their workout plans need to be more monitored and slightly modified compared to adults to avoid muscle strains. Also, it is important that children will do regular cardio exercise for optimal health and for a proper warm up.
Regardless of age, everyone should be physically active whether they are lifting weights, do calisthenics, run, swim, etc. The younger one starts to work out, the better it is since they condition their body for optimal health and sports performance from a young age. For weight training though anywhere from fourteen to sixteen is the golden age to start.
